| CONGRESS SAYS NO! TO MEDICAID CUTS Both the Senate and the House had proposed billions of Medicaid cuts in their budget resolutions BUT Both the Senate and the House had proposed billions of Medicaid cuts in their budget resolutions BUT because of the thousands of letters from pediatricians that poured into Capitol Hill offices Congress heard our protests. First, the Senate passed an amendment eliminating their proposed $11 billion in cuts, and then finally late last week, the House-Senate conferees removed the House’s proposed 2.2 billion in Medicaid cuts. Medicaid cuts. Millions of families that depend on Medicaid and the Academy thank you for your continued dedication in the fight against Medicaid cuts. Your countless letters and stories made an impact on Capitol Hill. It wasn’t just about numbers anymore - you put a person and a family behind the numbers - and because of that members of Congress heard you and you truly made a difference for your patients. Despite our successful efforts with Medicaid funding, we have to continue to work to protect our patients, because public health funding is suffering. Thank your member of Congress for removing the Medicaid cuts but ask them to help protect other important public health funding in the next steps of the budget process. Take action! Go to www.aap.org/moc (Member Login required) and then click on Federal Affairs (right hand side) and once there click on, "Protect Public Health!" - Try to include any personal or relevant evidence you feel might add to the letter and strengthen the argument. - If you can print out the letter, copy it handwritten onto a piece of paper and then fax the handwritten letter. Shots for Tots to Teens It is time once again for the Shots for Tots to Teens statewide immunization event. Last years event was the most successful in the history of the Shots for Tots to Teens (formerly known as Operation Kid Shot) with nearly 3,500 children receiving immunizations. This year with your help the Shots for Tots to Teens event can continue to grow and provided immunization to more children and improve the immunization rates of the state. Saturday July 31st is the big day. Please contact me for registration forms. The tips cover topics such as heat stress in exercising children, boat safety, "fun in the sun" and skateboard and scooter safety. The Summer Safety Tips can be found at http://www.aap. org/advocacy/releases/summertips.htm FIREWORKS SAFETY As the Fourth of July approaches, the AAP is again working with the National Fire Protection Association and other leading health and safety groups to call for a ban on consumer fireworks. Citing deaths, injuries and fires, the group strongly suggests that consumers and children not use these devices and instead attend public fireworks displays conducted by professionals. Sparklers, for example, can burn up to more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. And in 2002, eight out of nine emergency department fireworks injuries involved fireworks that are permitted for consumer use by federal regulations. For more information on this initiative contact Carolyn Kolbaba at 847/434-7945. |
