OUR FIRST QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT-ADHD
|
ADHD: Do we diagnose it too often? Do we drug kids? Do we communicate well with our educator partners about it? We
don’t need to emphasize the controversies surrounding care for children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, or to tell
you how much effort we all put into taking care of children with ADHD.
We would like to ask you to work with us in improving the care that we all give to children with ADHD in New Mexico. The
New Mexico Pediatric Society is one of only five American Academy of Pediatrics chapters selected to initially participate in
the Partnerships for Quality project (PFQ)* about the improvement of ADHD care. Some of us attended a session given by
Mort Wasserman, MD, at last spring’s Wylder Lectures (2003), detailing the remarkable steps that the Vermont chapter has
taken in working with practices to improve those aspects of care that they, the pediatricians, wanted to improve.
We are looking for pediatricians with a willingness and commitment to put together a team from their offices (a pediatrician
plus a nurse and a receptionist or office manager) to improve care for children with ADHD. Each of the practices will share
what they learn with other participating practices in this learning collaborative.
Details of the program are included in the practice application and prework but here are a few points:
-Computer-based assessment of ADHD care in our offices, using the Academy’s eQIPP program giving you lots of CME
credit available at a very low price (about $3.50 per credit hour!).
-A six-hour seminar on ADHD and its care in Albuquerque on Saturday June 5th! (Please let us know If you cannot attend-
some exception may be made)
-Conference calls led by national experts and including other New Mexico participants ready to share their successes (or
failures) at improving ADHD care in their own offices.
-Help at solving those aspects of ADHD care that your practice wants to tackle.
-Help developing methods to solve other perplexing, frustrating, head splitting care problems in your practice.
Please read over the material in the practice application and prework CAREFULLY! Then, please return the practice
application, eQIPP enrollment form (note: only one eQIPP enrollment is necessary for your team) and the consent form to
the appropriate folks and make plans to join us! Everything you need to apply is right here. If you’d like more information
before signing up, we’ll be glad to answer any questions you have by phone or email. Use the e-mail addresses below, or
call us at work or at home, send us a letter or a fax – but join us! We are all excited about this first statewide pediatric quality
improvement collaborative!
